FAQs-Coaching
What is the difference between coaching and advocacy?
Advocates often focus heavily on education law and your rights. While I’m familiar and well versed in those topics, my goal isn’t to speak for a family, but rather equip the family with the knowledge and tools necessary to speak for themselves.
What do your sessions look like? What can I expect to walk away with after a paid session with you?
This heavily depends on the type of session you’re looking for. I offer both basic education coaching as well as case coaching. The difference between these two is described in my pricing sheet.
Why charge? What am I paying for?
I have a Masters Degree in Speech Language Pathology, have 8 years of school related special education experience, and I have also completed paid online training to be a Master IEP Coach. These things have equipped me with knowledge and resources that not all parents have time to explore. I always provide a free IDOE resource during my consultations, but what I’m saving you is the time and energy it takes to sometimes learn these things independently.
Can I pay you to attend case conferences?
As a parent coach, my hope is that I am able to equip families with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to feel confident speaking for themselves and their student at case conferences. I am comfortable attending conferences, but if you’re looking for someone to attend conferences and speak on your behalf, I would encourage you to look into private advocacy groups.
FAQs-SLP
What types of services can an SLP provide?
Speech therapists earn their Master’s Degree with competencies in articulation, language, social language, cognition, and swallowing. We can work in school systems, private practices, hospitals, and even more creative spaces. After graduation however, most clinicians dig into a specific area and find their ‘niche’. I would consider mine to be school aged speech and language and I am working towards more confidence with pediatric swallowing.
What is the difference between speech and language?
Speech (or articulation) is how we produce sounds and what it ‘sounds like’ when we speak. Language is how we understand and communicate with others both verbally and non-verbally. Language impairments are often much more involved than we realize when it comes to the impact on academics. This includes pragmatics, or ‘social’ language.
Early Intervention? What do you do with babies?
As an early intervention provider I have worked with babies as young as 7 months old. At that age we are often targeting early prelinguistic cognitive milestones or swallowing difficulties.
